What's a framework and do I need one?

Updated 4/19/23

In the badge world, a framework is a guiding structure for your badge program. It is the skeleton. A good framework will allow you to compare credentials and develop credentials with consistency.

For example, you might have a very simple framework like this:

Beginner Intermediate Advanced
3 hours self-paced instruction 8 hours instructor led instruction 30 hours instructor led instruction
no direct assessment quizzes as assessment  work product to be reviewed
available to anyone requires prerequisites  requires prerequisites and endorsement of manager

There are a variety of skill-based frameworks you might also consider. For example:

Lumina’s Connecting Credentials Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework

European Qualifications Framework.

The ICE Competency Framework for Professional Development

 J-WEL's Human Skills Matrix

NACE competencies.
