What happens when I edit or update a badge template image or metadata?

Updated 4/19/23

You are able to edit a badge template anytime - even after it's been published and badges have been issued from the template.

If you choose to edit a published template, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • all badges issued from this template will automatically be updated when you save your changes
  • an earner is not notified that a badge template has been updated
  • there is no action required from the earner when a badge template is updated

Some changes will be minor and won't require any communication with your earners. If you're rebranding and updating badge visuals and/or metadata, you might want to communicate with your earners about these changes.

Below are some ideas for how to communicate:

Our digital credentials are getting a new look! We will be updating the look and feel of our digital badges with new branding and your credential may be updated as a part of this rebrand.

Things to Know:
  • If you haven't already done so, please use your badge notification email or create an account on Credly's platform to accept and share your badge.
  • Your badge empowers you to:
    • Easily share your credentials with your professional network on LinkedIn, other social channels, and email. Your badge provides context and verification of your skills and achievements - all uniquely linked to you.
    • When someone views your badge on LinkedIn, they’ll be able to learn more about your skills and verify its authenticity.
  • Sharing is Caring:
    • Linkedin Newsfeed: Go ahead and share your updated credential on your Newsfeed for your whole network to see! If you've already shared your credential on your Feed, the badge will not update automatically.
    • Linkedin Profile: Adding your credential to your Profile makes your accomplishment a permanent part of your online resume. Your achievement will populate within the License & Credential section of your profile. The badge image doesn't display in the Accomplishments section of the profile as Linkedin displays [your org's] logo there instead. You can click the "See certificate" button to verify badge details on Credly.

Note: If you have already shared your badge to your profile, you may need to update the name of your credential. To do so, you can simply Edit the certificate details by clicking the pencil icon when you hover over the entry. The link will still direct back to Credly for real-time verification.
Recommend that they share their badge!
Use Recommendations to create Next Steps and Opportunities that only earners of your badges will see. Once they view/accept their badge, the Recommendation is front and center for them, so you could give details about hashtags you want them to use or just encourage them to reshare with the new visual. Click here for more information about Recommendations.
